Refrigerator Oatmeal, of all things




A couple of weeks ago when I was in Waco Texas I bought a bag of 6 grain cereal at the Heritage Homestead. The gains had been ground there in the grist mill (my favorite spot at the homestead, see photos above). The directions for preparing it were for overnight in the refrigerator. I had heard of refrigerator oatmeal, but had never tried it. I love it! I feel like I’m eating dessert for breakfast. I quickly finished off my bag of cereal I had purchased.

Here is the recipe I came up with… give it a try, you might like it.


  • 4 cups oats (1/2 old fashion 1/2 quick)
  • 1oz bag of freeze-dried apples or strawberries (I crunched the apples up a bit)
  • 1/3 cup dried sweetened cranberries
  • 1/3 cup flax seed
  • 1/3 cup raw sunflower seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1 tsp cinnamon

Stir together:


Spoon 1/2 cup of cereal mix into a jar

IMG_7644Add 1 cup of milk to the jar. I’ve started using goat milk recently, it doesn’t bother my stomach like regular milk.  My jars are kinda small so I only get about 3/4 cup of the milk to fit.  Put on the lid and stick it in the refrigerator.  Now the hard part… wait at least overnight before eating the first jar. I sprinkle a bit of sugar on top and add a splash more milk and then consume it way to fast, wanting another jar! Enjoy!
